Tree hugging

The last time we went camping was when I was prego with Preston. It is not that we haven't wanted to go, things just kept coming up. So even though it was the end of October and Halloween night we were determined to introduce the next generation to the great adventures you can only have when you sleep in the forest.
We went to Hanging Rock which is only about 45 minutes from our house, just in case the experience was not what we imaged and we had to come home in middle of the night. That didn't happen, thankfully! We left early on Friday, well it was like 11:30 but our plan was to leave early. We started with hiking to the top of hanging rock. It was a short hike but pretty steep in places so it took us forever. Preston and Salta walked almost the whole thing. At the top we had the most amazing view and the fall colors were unbelievable. Picture below does not do the colors justice. Our friends the Swensons joined us for the hike and for a camp fire afterwards, but bailed out and went home to sleep in their beds (they have a 5 month old). I am grateful that they came because Richard ended up carrying Spencer on the hike most of the way (he also gave him a wicked scratch on his face but what is a camping trip without battle wounds)

We saw lots of wild life. Its hard to tell but below are lady bugs on a rock. Nearer to the top of the hike we were attacked by lady bugs. Literally thousands of lady bugs were hanging out. It was crazy.
We also saw a snake on the path.

And here is a Mountain Lion! Pretty scary, huh?
This is our camping site. North Carolina has great car camping sites complete with really nice washrooms. Our tent was small but we all fit and would have been comfortable if Spencer had actually gone to sleep.

In the morning we hiked to the lake which was right below our site. That house is a rental house for parties and such. It was really pretty.

Overall, I think it was a successful first camping trip and we can't wait to do it again!

You wrote that at 2am are you nuts? Anyway, it looks like you guys had a great time. We definitely need to coordinate a time to go camping in the future. The fall is just perfect because it is so beautiful.
